SIX

July

“You need to get it together, July,” I hiss at my reflection in the ladies’ room. “Jesus Christ. The sexiest man you’ve ever seen would be a cop.”

I grip the sides of the sink. What the hell am I going to do now? “I should fake being sick,” I mutter. “End the date, go home, never talk to him again.”

Except I’ve already used that excuse once. Then again, I could always say that I thought I was better and now I’m not. It’s not like that’d be so hard to believe.

Lies. Lies. Lies. Nothing but lies.

I glare at myself. “You’re an idiot for thinking you could have a normal relationship. You can’t. You lied to him the first minute you met him, and you haven’t stopped.”

I’ve lost count of how many lies I’ve told him. But hell. What’s one more, especially if it’s the last one?

I take a deep breath and step out of the restroom, then hesitate. On the opposite side of the restaurant, there’s a door that opens to the back patio, where I love to sit when the weather’s nice. Currently, it’s empty, because February. But there’s a gate that opens to a sidewalk. I could take that, zoom around the corner, call a ride, and wash my hands of the mess I’ve made.

My gaze travels to the other side of the restaurant, where Cillian sits by himself. He sips his drink. From what I can see, he hasn’t touched the mussels yet, likely waiting for me to return, because that’s the polite thing to do. He’s not even scrolling through his phone. He’s just…waiting.

I close my eyes, a sudden sharp pang tearing through my chest. I’ve learned to get really good at reading people over the years, and it doesn’t take more than a few minutes for me to know instinctively if someone’s got a good soul. With Michael, I knew instantly he didn’t, but I wanted so much to be by his side that I told myself he was good, he was just forced to do bad things. But I knew the truth deep down, and when I broke free of him, I promised myself I’d never ignore my instincts again.

I can tell Cillian is a good man. I can feel it down to my marrow. Everything about him is good, from his looks to his mind to the little bits of his heart I’ve seen tonight. He’s good.

And he sure as shit doesn’t deserve to get mixed up with someone like me.

I chew my lip, glancing again at the patio door. If I go that route, it’ll take him probably another minute or two to realize I’ve been gone a long time. Being the kind of guy he is, he’ll be concerned and maybe even come check on me, or try to. He’ll realize I’m gone. He’ll ask the bartender, the staff, if they saw me leave. They’ll nod and point to the patio door. She left about five minutes ago. Sorry, dude.

He’ll try to message me.
